John Fuller’s hauntingly strange and lyrical novel. On a desolate island monastery in the Middle Ages, pilgrims are going missing one by one…

"A short, charged and imaginative fable-cum-murder-mystery which uses [Fuller's] gift for narrative and for elaborate metaphor to great effect."  -  Sunday Times

On a lonely island off the coast of Wales, complete with the monastery, farm and miraculous well, the Abbot is at his dissecting table, engaged in a desperate and macabre search for the physical seat of the soul. Meanwhile, the Bishop’s emissary, who has been sent to investigate the alarming disappearance of increasing numbers of pilgrims, is digging up the island.

"As rich and exciting as Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose, but deeper and more disturbing... It begins as a murder mystery but ends in a revelation of deeper mysteries of death and rebirth."  -  The New York Times

John Fuller is the author of some 20 volumes of poetry, as well as assorted novels, children’s fiction and essays. As a Booker Prize judge, he said that in ‘its economy and elegance,’ Anita Brookner’s winning Hotel du Lac was ‘a small triumph of moral insight worthy of the tradition of James and Forster’. In 1968, Fuller established the Sycamore Press, based in his garage, which published, among others, W. H. Auden, Peter Porter and Philip Larkin.
