Engaging account of the history of the Jews and, more importantly, the Jewish identity as an ethnos, from the time of the Babylonian exile through the Roman dissolution of the Jewish state in the second century A.D. While the details can be confusing -- the lead characters have an annoying habit of sharing the same names -- Allegro is in sufficient control of the primary sources to spin a tale of almost soap opera proportions: sex, politics, family rivalries, sincere religious aspirations and venial personal ambitions. And the world was never again the same.
